Employability

Student Finance 2012-13

91% of our graduates last year were in employment or full-time study 6 months after graduating. We work hard to achieve this result as we understand how important it is that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge that they need to pursue the career of their choice. We see employability as an on-going developmental process that involves many different aspects of university life. At York St John you will find many opportunities to develop your strengths, to learn new skills and to gain experience of the world of work so that when you graduate you have a CV that you are proud of.

The Jobs and Careers team has close links with local employers and offers access to a range of graduate, part-time, voluntary and internship opportunities. The team works closely with academic staff to embed employability and career planning into the curriculum. Combined with 1:1 interviews and a programme of workshops and presentations, students are encouraged to explore their options and learn how to articulate their skills and experience successfully in job applications, CVs and interviews.

Our degree programmes all include opportunities to undertake work placements and gain experience with local employers, a highly valued element of YSJ degrees. Many programmes offer opportunities to undertake placements abroad providing students with rich life experiences and an in-depth understanding of another culture. Students have worked in Bangladesh, Botswana, Uganda, Norway, Hong Kong and the USA.

Our professional accredited degrees in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Teacher Training are highly regarded in their respective sectors and graduates from these programmes are highly employable.

For students considering starting up their own business we run workshops in developing business ideas, marketing, finance and business planning. Students can bid for funding to develop their business idea and participate in enterprise fairs.

At YSJ we encourage students to seize the many opportunities that being at university provides such as sports coaching, mentoring, volunteering, networking and working as a researcher. Students also have the opportunity to broaden their skills and experience by studying a language or studying abroad. YSJ staff have developed many close links and partnerships with organisations from the public, private and third sectors; in health, culture and arts, sport, technology and many more. Partnerships ensure that our degree programmes remain relevant to employer needs but also provide springboards for our students to grow their own networks, crucial for employment in the 21st century. If there's an idea you wish to develop or an aspiration that you wish to explore we have a dedicated website where you can seek funding and get support to create your very own opportunity.
