Widening Participation

Widening Higher Education in HE

York St John University is committed towards Widening Participation (WP) in higher education. We work with schools, colleges and communities across the region to ensure there are opportunities for everyone. We aspire to create an environment where students and staff are all able to benefit from a higher education based on individual choice and academic strength, irrespective of personal circumstance.  Our commitment to inclusivity, to our diverse community of learners and to our responsibilities to the wider community is enshrined in our Student Recruitment and Widening Participation objectives and is clearly stated in the Access Agreement and the Admissions Policy.

Our Widening Participation Team work especially with people and communities who are under-represented in higher education;

  • Low socio-economic or disadvantaged backgrounds
  • first in their family to attend university
  • learners with disabilities
  • care leavers
  • learners with caring responsibilities
  • minority ethnic learners
  • mature or returning learners

We offer all sorts of activites for pre-16 learners delivered in school and at the University campus;

  • In school workshops
  • Campus visits
  • Targeting projects
  • Information, Advice and Guidance services
  • Summer Schools
  • CPD for teachers
  • Subject taster sessions
  • Parent Workshops
  • Long term parental projects
  • Parents' evenings and careers/higher education fairs
  • Student shadowing

We work in collaboration with colleges, schools and community organisations;

We use Student Ambassadors (current students) in our outreach work so that learners can get a true account of what it's really like to go to university.
