Womens International Conference held at Sangat Centre, Kay Hepplewhite and MA
Applied Theatre students designed and facilitated
theatre-making workshop on celebrating women's achievements for
international Women's Day at Sangat Community Centre, Keighley.
Talking Through Art
This was a short 6 weeks course delivered by Martell Linsdell at the Sangat Centre enabling
BME students to think about skills and strength and
identify aspirations and personal
development. There was also a a visit to a art
gallery and colour experimentation.
Faculty of Education & Theology
In December 2009 ran a fully funded outreach initiative
attracting twenty Asian women from the Sangat Community Centre in
Keighley and was run at the centre by Dr
Mike Calvert, Head of Children, Young People and Education
(CYPE) and Katie Simpson, Deputy Head of
External Relationships. The course was designed to help women
understand the Every Child Matters agenda, related to the
well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19.
Sobia Iqbal, one of the course attendees said "I had never
considered the possibilities of higher education of being at York
St John University today has shown me that this is a real option
open to me".
The faculty extended their work of the Subject Area of Theology
and Religious Study in meeting and sharing ideas with a Muslim
community in the Yorkshire region. The day visit focused on
religious belief and practice in multi-faith Britain today.
Four lectures, with expertise in Islam; Sikhism; Buddhism;
Hinduism; Christianity and popular religion contributed to the
sessions.
