Young People

Young studentsYoung people, who live in areas least likely to participate in Higher Education, are an important focus in our Widening Participation initiatives and partnerships.

We work in collaboration with partners to deliver a framework of activities for Primary, Secondary and Colleges tailored to their year group.

We are very proud of our partnerships and close working with other Universities such as for the North Yorkshire Coast Higher Education Collaboration between University of York, University of Hull, Scarborough campus and York St John. Also  we are a partner in the ‘Green Apples’ project working with the University of York, Askham Bryan College, York College and City of York Council as well as working with the North Yorkshire Business Education Partnership (NYBEP) and York St John is a partner organisation in York Cares and the York Childrens University.

We bring young people to the University campus as early as Year 6 and at the different stages of their education pathway to experience Higher Education. We provide information and activities appropriate to their age groups and stage in their education. They may take part in subject tasters led by academic tutors, undertake exciting activities to think about what it is like to be a student, look at how to manage living on a budget, moving away from home and independent study skills.  We aim to put Higher Education onto the young participants personal map with a view to informing their choices for their future.

We also work closely with schools and colleges right across the region, offering presentations on university life and introducing young people and their carers and parents to our students who act as role models and mentors.
