Young People

Students studying CounsellingYoung People who are in areas least likely to participate in Higher Education are targeted in our Widening Participation initiatives and partnership working with Aimhigher Offices across the region. We work in collaboration with the North Yorkshire Business Education Partnership (NYBEP) and are a partner in the ‘Green Apples’ project working with the University of York, Askham Bryan College, York College, City of York Council and Connexions.

We bring young people to the University as early as Year 6 and at the different stages of their education pathway to experience Higher Education. They may take part in subject tasters led by academic tutors, undertake exciting activities to think about what it is like to be a student, look at how to manage living on a budget, moving away from home and independent study skills.  We aim to put Higher Education onto the young participants personal map with a view to opening the doors to their future.

We also work closely with schools and colleges right across the region, often visiting them, giving presentations on university life and introducing young people and their carers and parents to our students who act as role models and mentors.
