Volunteering Programme
The
volunteering programme for our alumni and students has been
developed and tailored for extracurricular learning and has been
particularly successful with our international students, who have
not traditionally been involved with University volunteering.
It is worth noting that, with the exception of John Maw, currently
all Alumni Development Office volunteers are international
students.

The aims of our programme
Our primary aim is to offer mutually beneficial development
opportunities to both the volunteer and the University. The
programme also aims to develop networking skills, time and people
management, confidence, teamwork and event management skills.
We provide a comprehensive list of available time-constrained
projects to enable the volunteers to select which ones can be most
beneficial to them but we also encourage the students to suggest
volunteering projects themselves (this may not necessarily be
within the Alumni Development Office).
Benefits of the programme
The programme has been mutually beneficial as it has provided
extracurricular activities to the volunteers and increased the
capacity of our small team. We have also shaped outstanding
ambassadors for York St John, which could also have an important
role in international recruitment.
Each volunteer receives an annual personalised written reference
as well as a certificate outlining all the projects they have
supported. They have also received letters of thanks from
senior University staff. Where possible we always ensure they
have the option to attend additional courses/seminars.
