As York St John has changed, grown and
developed it has recognised the importance of recording, sharing
and celebrating its history. To do this the University has run a
number of projects including the Heritage Trail and the Archives
Roadshow. A very important part of this work to acknowledge
our history is the publication of an updated and extensively
revised history book on the Institution written by former
Principal, Professor Gordon McGregor. The first edition was
published in 1991 by Professor McGregor and asked the question is
the Institution ‘A Church College for the 21st Century?’
The new book answers this question and
includes all the original chapters along with new chapters,
new photographs, a new foreword from the Archbishop of York, Dr
John Sentamu all bound in hard and soft back in a stunning new
cover.
The book is a detailed history of both Ripon
and York and puts the Institution's achievement of University title
in the broader context of both the history of the Colleges, its
people and government educational policy. If you have read the
first edition you will want to read this updated version to find
out what happened next and if you didn't this is the definitive
history of the Institution at which you studied.
All royalties from the sale of the book go to
the University's Scholarship Programme SPARK. Professor Gordon
McGregor kindly conducted his research and writing as a
volunteer. The book is now priced £10 (hardback) or £5
(paperback).
