Dr David Powell
Senior Lecturer in History
Dr David Powell teaches British, Irish and modern European
history. He studied history as an undergraduate at the
University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and received his doctorate in
Modern History from the University of Oxford. His main research
interests are in modern British political and social history, the
history of nationalism and national identities, and the nature of
historical writing, including the fictional representation of the
past, with particular reference to the historical novel.
His publications include British Politics and the Labour
Question, 1868-1990 (Macmillan, 1992), The Edwardian Crisis:
Britain 1901-1914 (Macmillan, 1996), Nationhood and Identity: the
British State since 1800 (I.B.Tauris, 2002) and British Politics
1910-35: the crisis of the party system (Routledge, 2004), as well
as numerous articles, essays and reviews. He is currently
working on a project exploring aspects of the historiography of
early twentieth century Britain.
Research interests
- modern British political history, especially party politics and
the history of the party system in the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries
- labour history and the history of popular movements
- nationalism and national identities
- historiography and forms of historical writing
- fictional representations of the past, with particular
