Experience

John has worked at YSJ since 1996 and recently became a full-time academic tutor. Previously, his responsibilities were split between tuition and looking after the technical requirements, in sound, lighting and set design, on all the modules in the theatre strand of the Performance and Communication Arts Degrees, and teaching on specific modules. John's professional career began in 1980 when he was stage manager for Hull Truck Theatre Company. For the next 16 years, he was part of a small team, working as production manager and lighting designer, which developed the company into a large, middle and small scale touring operation with a 320 seat venue in Hull and an international reputation. When John Godber joined the company as artistic director in 1984, he was the lighting designer on a number of the world premier performances of his plays such as 'Teachers' 'Shakers', 'April in Paris' and 'Blood, Sweat and Tears'.

Research & Interests

Interested in all forms of performance, especially the visual design element, John still carries out design work for a number of organisations, such as community groups and schools. He recently created the lighting design for an urban musical which was performed at Leeds Town Hall and the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
