Film Production - Working with others
We have strong links with industry practitioners
working in all aspects of film and television production.
Professionals who come to campus regularly include sound
engineers, camera operators, producers and scriptwriters.
Amongst our regular visitors are directors Mark Herman, Ian
Bevitt, Nicky Ball and Pete Harness. Mark Herman helps with
script development and editing for our third year students and acts
a judge for our best fiction film competition. We also enjoy
close links with the Royal Television Society,
Screen Yorkshire and
independent cinemas in the region. City
Screen, the York independent cinema, has screened work by
our students.
A close working partnership with independent
production company True North, the award winning
producer of factual programmes, has enabled us to provide work
placements and internships with this Leeds-based firm. Many of our
graduates have gone on to work with True North and
other productions companies.

Channel 4 Provided Inspiration for Young Film and Television
Makers at York St John University
Channel 4’s Inspiration Week North was held at York St John
University on Thursday 27 October 2011.
Topics covered on the day included Presenting for
Television with Julian Bennett; Broadcast, Print & Online
Journalism with Lucille Howe; Exploring Digital Film
Making with Yeast Culture Creative Director Nick Hillel; and
Creating a Positive Digital Footprint with Tom Barrett.
The scheme provides young people aged 14-19 years old with an
all-round view of the media, enabling them to understand the
different roles within the industry. It’s about breaking down
barriers and inspiring people by showing them the skills and
experiences and attitudes they need to progress – as well as
innovative ways to focus and strengthen their own career
prospects.
Inspiration Week North took place from 24 October – 27 October
2011 and was broken down in to four Inspiration Days in the
following cities across the region (Sheffield: 24 October,
Liverpool: 25 October, Bradford: 26 October, and York: 27
October).
