Music BA (Hons)

Ours is a ‘hands on’ and creative approach to
learning which allows students to engage in a wide variety of
musical genres, to get involved in new creative projects and to
work with young people and community groups. We are looking for
open minded, creative musicians with strong practical skills and
the potential to succeed.
You can study our Music programme as a Specialist

Our music staff have a wide range of research
interests which feed into their teaching and give students the
chance to keep abreast of developments. For example, current
research interests are in the benefits of music for people’s health
and well-being, music and social inclusion, music education, and
creativity and collaboration in composition and performance.

Music students work is featured on a CD and can
strut their stuff on campus in front of a sometimes rapturous
audience. From riotous big bands to challenging contemporary
compositions, everyone has a regular opportunity to showcase their
talents and practice the art of stagecraft.

You will have many opportunities to work with
other musicians, from a choir for people with learning difficulties
and disabilities to professional singers and international
composers. Recently, York St John joined forces with the National
Association of Music Educators, York University and local schools
to celebrate the work of music educator John Paynter.
