Theatre BA (Hons)

Theatre at York St John is explored through
practice and we have several specialist studio spaces and
numerous other spaces that all have the capacity for students
to experience workshop methods, perform group work, duets, solo
work, devised or text based productions. As well as being used for
teaching practice our spaces enable students to rehearse in their
own time as well as being used for visiting lectures. We have a
touring venue called Performing
House that invites contemporary performance companies to
our campus.
Students also have great opportunities to
enhance their international experience of theatre making through
our network of international partners. "If you want to get your
hands dirty making theatre, YSJ is the place for you.” You
can enhance your existing theatre making skills by
engaging with the rich diversity of different theatre making
traditions that we explore here at York St John. Working with
theatre scripts, devising new work for the studio or working
site-specifically are options to explore as you define your
particular passion for theatre making.
You can study our Theatre programme as a
Specialist degree.

Research at YSJ is an important part of our
approach to teaching and learning. Students engage with staff in
subjects as varied as arts and health, the processes of performance
making, audience research, historical contexts for autobiography
and the feminine, theatre as witness and social theatre techniques
with young people and women.

Opportunities exist in the programme for
students to see professional work that tours to the region and well
as taking full advantage of the cultural offer that takes place in
London and Glasgow in relation to the international theatre work at
The Barbican in London or The Tramway and National Review of Live
Art, both in Glasgow. |

Professional theatre
companies are regular visitors to YSJ theatre. YSJ students
have also been involved in York Theatre Royal’s pioneering Takeover
festival, which sees young people aged between 16 and 25 completely
take over the venue for a short season, we have been part of the
city’s Mystery Play cycle and there are regular visits to national
and regional theatre.
