Profile Teaching Professional Activities Research

I have taught British Sign Language for 11 Years 7 of those years here at York St John University.

As a Senior Lecturer at York St John I teach on all BSL modules, facilitating students from those who have never signed a word to being fluent in BSL; not just as a language but as a culture. In 2011 I was awarded National Teacher of the Year by Signature and York Adult Tutor of the Year by City of York Council’s “York 800” in 2012.

I engage in teaching staff basic and advanced d/Deaf awareness at the University and for other companies and business around the area. Helping to encourage openness and equal access for d/Deaf people in the community and work place.

I support the Sign Language Society getting BSL out of the classroom and developing confidence and inspiring wider involvement of BSL around the University.

I have taught BSL in many schools and organisations in my time as a teacher and  lead a small team of BSL lecturers here at York St John to further develop on our growing student numbers in the subject, hopefully we will repeat 2011’s performance of an excellent 100% pass rate.
