My main research activities are in the areas
of: classroom discourse analysis; language, gender and sexuality;
language in education; gender and sexuality in education.
- I am the author of Approaches to Gender
and Spoken Classroom Discourse (Palgrave, 2012) and (with Liz
Morrish) New Perspectives on Language and Sexual Identity
(Palgrave, 2007).
- I am the co-editor (with
Kate Harrington, Lia Litosseliti and Jane Sunderland) of Gender
and Language Research Methodologies (Palgrave, 2008) and (with
Sakis Kyratzis) Language, Sexualities and Desires:
Cross-Cultural Perspectives (Palgrave, 2007).
- I am currently undertaking
research investigating discursive constructions of sexuality in
educational contexts. I regularly liaise with and disseminate my
research on sexuality and education to Stonewall UK (gay rights
organisation) who use academic research to lobby the government
about sexuality equality issues in various contexts. My language,
sexuality and education work has also been used by the National
Union of Teachers, Birmingham City Council and Birmingham Youth
Service to inform anti-homophobic bullying initiatives in schools
and to lobby the government about addressing homophobia in schools.
I am a member of the British Association of Applied Linguistics,
the British Educational Research Association, and the International
Gender and Language Association.
- Other research activities
include editorial board membership of the Journal of Language
and Sexuality. I also regularly review submissions for the
following academic journals: Gender and Education;
Anthropology and Education Quarterly; Journal of
Pragmatics. I have acted as a reviewer for the ESRC grants
board and Palgrave Macmillan publisher. I am a member of the
conference organising committee for the Annual Conference on
Lavender Languages and Linguistics (held at American University,
Washington DC, USA). I am regularly involved with the BAAL (British
Association of Applied Linguistics) Gender and Language Special
Interest Group and the BERA (British Educational Research
Association) Sexualities Special Interest Group.
