Profile Teaching Professional Activities Publications Research

I’m an applied linguist with a specific research interest in additional language education, in particular:

  • World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca
  • Assessment of language learning and proficiency
  • Classroom language
  • Multilingual group work and intercultural communication
  • Technology for learning and teaching languages
  • Discourse analysis

I am currently working with some of my students on a project that uses discourse analysis to explore the nature of communication in mixed nationality academic group work.  The aim of the project is to design a classroom-based task that will raise all students’ awareness of the ways they interact with each other and how this interaction brings roles, attitudes and outcomes into being.  We hope to sensitise students in all subject areas to the negotiated nature of English as a lingua franca; a process that demands as much effort and expertise from students who have grown up speaking English as their first language, as from the students who are learning English as an additional language.
