Profile Teaching Professional Activities Publications Research

I began life as a secondary English teacher but then moved into teaching English to non-native speakers where I began to become interested in the core aspects of language/linguistics. Work in TESOL took me to Scandinavia where I taught adults from beginner to Cambridge Proficiency level as well as being involved in initial (ESOL) teacher training and business consultancy work.  After this, I increasingly focused on business English, materials production and communications consultancy work both in the UK and Italy. A brief spell in a British state school before arriving at York St John refocused my language interests onto education and having arrived in the Linguistics department at York St John, I contributed for some years to Initial Teacher Education programmers (primary) as well as teaching on BA and MA courses within the Linguistics department.  I was later seconded for two years to work as a KS3 consultant on the pilot phase of the secondary National Literacy Strategy which included In-service teacher training. I am currently Head of Programme for the Online MA in English Language and Linguistics
