Referee
Somebody who will write a statement about you for your
application to university. Often a teacher or someone who knows you
from school / college who can comment about your potential as a
student.

Rejected application
When you apply to a university but they choose not to offer you
a place. If all your applications are rejected you can still go
through the clearing process.
