Scholarship
A sum of money offered to certain students by a university
for a particular reason, for example academic or sporting
excellence, or because they have overcome obstacles to get to
university. York St John University’s scholarship fund is called
SPARK
Semester
Half of an academic year (similar to a term, but where the year
is split into two sessions rather than three). There are usually
holidays between semesters.
Seminar
A small group of students gathered together to discuss an
area of the subject they are studying.
Student Finance England
The government run agency that distributes most student loans
and grants in England. See www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
There is an equivalent agency in Wales, Northern Ireland and
Scotland.
Student Loan
A sum of money lent to you to pay your tuition fees and living costs. These only have
to be paid back when you are earning enough to afford the
repayments, and then only in small amounts.
Students’ Union
The building on campus run by the N.U.S where clubs and
societies are run, and often social events take place. There is
often a bar and sometimes a venue for live music.
