Why Study Here?
We are a small yet diverse area with a wide range of interests
including research in learning and teaching as well as our academic
subject specialisms. We are committed to providing a
supportive and friendly learning environment and we use a range of
teaching methods including lectures, seminars, workshops and online
work. We are really interested in looking at real world
language use, so there will be lots of opportunities for you to
collect your own data and develop your research skills.
We offer the following programmes:
(If you want to study languages with
linguistics or another subject, please visit the Languages Area of this site.)
- We run a fortnightly Colloquium Series during term-time, where you
will be able to hear guest speakers from language and linguistics
departments from universities in the UK and overseas speak about
their research.
- Students have access to the Linguistics Lab in additional to the
standard facilities.
- Our former students go on to a broad range of activities after
they leave York St John.

Work Placement
In their second year, our BA students take
Language and Communication in the Workplace, a module with a work
placement element.
Students who are seriously considering future
careers in an educational context understand that prior experience
is now a pre-requisite of most jobs in this sector. So, placements
in both primary schools and secondary schools are very
popular.
As well as school-based placements, students
choose a wide range of opportunities working as events organisers,
journalists, in marketing, charity promotion and special
educational needs. Some more unusual placements include
students who have worked abroad, for example, teaching English in
India and Italy, and one student who worked in the Linguistics
department of a university in California. One of our students
did a placement with the prison service and is now doing an MA in
Forensic Linguistics. Another worked for the National Autistic
Society and is now working for them after graduation, demonstrating
how students’ careers can be both influenced and aided by their
placement.
