Robert Morris

Robert Morris“Being a full time mature student at York St John while also holding down a full time job at 37 hours a week, and having a family to support has certainly been a challenging experience!

Using a flexible working pattern to get to lectures and study has given me the opportunity to get a Degree with Honours in Language and Human Communication [now English Language and Linguistics].

The specialist programme has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The mix of younger and mature students works very well, the staff have been very supportive, and the interesting content of the modules have all combined to make the last three years very fulfilling.”

"Having some teaching experience and a linguistics degree, I decided to study for the York St John MA in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) to get an insight into the theoretical side of language teaching. After just two weeks on the programme I was critically examining my teaching methods, as well as teaching part-time!

The interesting module content and class discussions have boosted my motivation and given me a good understanding of current research in TESOL. An added bonus is the good mix of home and international students, for both academic and social activities."

Robert received his BA (Hons) degree in 2007 and his MA in 2008. He is now teaching English at a high school affiliated to Renmin University (Renda Fuzhong), in Beijing. He prepares the students there for the US SAT university exam, as well as teaching an English IGCSE course which qualifies students for entry into UK and Australian universities.
