"YSJ is a supportive, inclusive, student
focused university. The course I studied was interactive,
varied and challenging. It enabled my natural inquisitive nature
about language to be investigated in a supportive, fun and personal
academic atmosphere. I was able to study to a level I was
interested in, in subjects I was interested in, due to the
flexible, individualised programme structure
available.
During my time as a student
representative the lecturers listened to the suggestions put
forward which resulted in positive changes being made for future
students.
The module which focused on
communication in the workplace highlighted how important and vital
effective communication is in the workplace – studying this in an
actual workplace enabled identification of different communication
styles, as well as effective and less effective methods which I
have applied in my present employment.
The choice I made on the subject
for my dissertation was fundamental to my career. Due to the
depth in which I studied the subject I successfully gained
employment with the National Autistic Society, directly applying my
knowledge gained during my studies to my
work.
The support and encouragement as
well as the confidence I gained from my tutor for my dissertation
enabled me to reach levels of academia that were fascinating and
have resulted in me beginning a career which is rewarding,
interesting and paying my student loans off! I am now
investigating the possibility of continuing my academic study,
which means I must have been left with a positive feeling when I
graduated from York St John!"
Sue received her BA (Hons) degree in 2006
and is now working for the National Autistic Society.
