Centre for Global Education
The
Centre for Global Education York (CGE) is a Development Education
Centre raising awareness to global issues and provides training and
support in global education.
CGE is hosted by York St John University and is located on
the top floor of the New Wing building.
CGE aims to provide support, challenge, training and learning
opportunities that allow interactive involvement with a variety of
global educational projects and events.
What is global education?
There are many elements of everyday life which have their roots
in the wider world. Such elements include the environment, trade,
employment or information. Globalisation - economic, technological
or cultural - is a name given to the current awareness of how local
and global issues are connected. When these are translated for the
schools' curriculum it can be called global education. The fields
of global education are what have been called 'transformative'
educations - education which sets out to change things for the
better, contributing to an understanding of social justice both in
the UK and elsewhere.
Key concepts of the global dimension in
education:
- Human Rights including the UN Convention on the Rights of the
Child
- Global Citizenship
- Diversity
- Social Justice
- Conflict resolution
- Interdependence
- Sustainable development
- Values & perceptions
CGE works with YSJ University students and lecturers to support
them to include the global dimensions in their teaching and
learning. CGE also works with teachers, governors, community
groups, educational NGOs, Local Authorities and children and young
people in the introduction of global issues into the
curriculum.
Who are we?
CGE is an independent non for profit organisation with a board
of directors. CGE has a group of Associates that carry out
the work of the Centre
- Mick Bradley
- Chrissie Dell

- Jenny Zobel

The Resource Centre
CGE offers free
access to the Resource Centre for staff, students and of York St
John University, otherwise we run a membership scheme.
CGE takes a range of relevant journals and has books, teaching
materials and artefact boxes to support teaching and learning in
the field of global education.
Visiting academics and international students come to the Centre
to use the resources and carry out their own research. Staff at the
Centre welcomes these opportunities of sharing knowledge and the
exchange of ideas with colleagues from around the world.
