Welcome to CYPE

Our partnersWelcome to Children, Young People and Education (CYPE)

Since 2003, the Faculty of Education & Theology has been divided up into Initial teacher Education, Theology and CPD. CPD has represented all those areas of education that were not initial teacher education. We have a long reputation of supporting teachers and others working in the field of education and we have offered a range of courses for teachers, teaching assistants and others who work in an educational context and CPD reflected the fact that when we started, we worked mainly with LAs providing CPD.

Our work, however, now extends beyond education and we offer a range of programmes in education but also address the needs of the wider workforce and the youth and community sector. Consequently, the area has now changed its name to reflect the growing importance of this expansion into engagement with children, young people and families as well as education.

The philosophy is the same: from the Foundation Degree to Masters level study students are challenged to reflect on their work and engage in dialogue and research in order to arrive at sound understandings and, for those in paid or voluntary work in the sector, bring about meaningful, sustainable change in their practice.

Foundation Degrees

We have two strong Foundation Degrees in Supporting Learning and Working with Children and Young People.

Undergraduate study

At undergraduate level we have a well-established BA (Hons) Education Studies and a new BA (Hons) Children, Young People and Families. Students can progress from the Foundation Degree to the final year of the BA programme.

Postgraduate study

Our MA programme attracts a range of teachers and others working in an educational context and postgraduate certificates are available for particular groups, such as those working in early years and the advisory service. We also offer a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP) for new lecturers with HEA recognition and have recently developed an Associateship pathway for those in academic support roles.

Areas of expertise

We have particular expertise in the following areas:

Practitioner enquiry and reflective practice

Leadership and management

Teaching and learning

Working with the wider children’s workforce

Youth and community

Our Partners

We work with a range of partners (particularly the Local Authorities of the City of York, North Yorkshire, Doncaster and East Riding) with whom we have created a number of programmes to meet the needs of local teachers, teaching assistants and governors.

Our Staff

As well as our wide range of courses, CYPE staff are active researchers with particular emphasis on changing identities and voice.
