Relationships, Katie Simpson, Deputy Head of External Relationships

Paul Smith, Head of External Relationships
Paul is presently the Head of External
Relationships at principal lecturer level for the Faculty of
Education and Theology. In this role he is actively engaged
in a range of partnership work and widening participation
activities. Paul joined York St John in 2007 as Head of Programme
for Foundation Degrees in Educational Studies. In this role he led
the foundation degrees in Supporting Learning and Working with
Children and Young People. He has contributed to the teaching of
both of these programmes and the University's BA (Hons) Children,
Young People and Families and BA (Hons) Educational
Studies. Prior to joining the University, Paul worked in
a number of sixth-form colleges in both the North West and West
Yorkshire teaching students from fourteen to sixty years of age. In
this time he taught and managed both traditional academic as well
as more vocationally orientated course including A level, Applied A
level, GNVQ, BTEC, ACCESS, GCSE, NVQ and PGCE. His previous
management roles include Head of Health and Social Care, Head of
Sociology, College Learning Advisor, Manger (pastoral), Central
Mentor and Assistant Head of School.
Paul has a First Class honours degree in
Sociology(m) and Education(s) from the University of York. He also
gained a Masters Degree in Education (by research) from the same
institution and a PGCE from the University of Huddersfield. Whilst
at York St John he has also obtained a Post-graduate Certificate in
Academic Practice. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
and an external examiner for the Leeds Metropolitan University. He
is an article reviewer for the Journal of Vocational Education and
Training and the Educational Review. Paul is also a bid reviewer
for the Higher Education Academy for teaching and development
grants.
Paul is actively involved in research and his
research interests include teaching assistants’ identities and
learning experiences, apprenticeships, lifelong learning,
foundation degrees and work-based learning. Presently he is engaged
in undertaking research for a PhD which has a working title of ‘An
Ethnographic Analysis of Teaching Assistants’ Engagement with
Foundation Degree Study’.

Katie Simpson, Deputy Head of External Relationships
Katie joined the faculty in March 2009. Katie
has several years’ experience of working for Local Authorities and
the voluntary sector in Children and Young People’s Services in
Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
She has worked as a Connexions Personal Advisor, managed
multi-agency Youth Service Teams and with refugees as a Development
Officer for English for Speakers of Other Languages and Family
Learning.
Her role at York St John University is to create and develop
partnerships with a range of organisations. This includes other
Higher Education Institutions, Local Authorities, community, faith
and voluntary groups. Katie’s role involves working closely with
organisations to facilitate the development of new accreditation
opportunities, new modules and bidding opportunities. Katie is
involved in helping to develop Widening Participation initiatives
across the faculty, including short courses and taster sessions in
the community.
Katie has a degree in English and Media
Studies from the University of Leeds and a Master’s degree in
Educational Improvement, Development and Change from York St
John University.
Sati Howard, Acting Deputy Head of External Relationships
Sati has worked in Higher Education for over 12 years in a
variety of roles within course administration,
interprofessional learning and CPD. She joins external
relationships on secondment covering Katie Simpson's role during
her maternity leave.
Sati has previously worked at Leeds Metropolitan University in a
variety of roles within the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences
and is on secondment from her role as Senior Administrator within
Children, Young People and Education at York St John
University.
