Do I need a visa to attend the conference?
Depending on which country you are coming from
you may need a visa to be allowed to enter the UK.
If you have to apply for a full visa please
note it may take several months to get this. We recommend you
visit the Immigration website for the latest information on
whether you will need a visa at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/
If I am presenting a paper do I still have to register for the
conference?
All speakers are required to register. Presenters should ensure
they register by Thursday 31 May 2012. The cut-off date for
non-presenters booking a place will be Friday 21 June
2013.
Please note: Refunds will only be given up
to 31 May 2013.
What is involved in producing a paper for the conference?
Please see the Submitting an Abstract page which gives
all the relevant information.
When do I have to submit my abstract?
Abstracts of up to 300 words (including references) are invited
for submission by 28 February 2013 to m.calvert@yorksj.ac.uk .
Responses to abstracts will be sent out by 29
March 2013.
Where can I see the programme for the day?
This will be available to download as soon as it is
finalised.
How do I book onto the various sessions?
Booking for the sessions will take place
during registration on the first day of the conference. A
programme containing abstracts will be available on the website
prior to this so you can read through the list of sessions in
advance to enable you to make an informed choice.
Where will I be staying?
Delegates attending the EAEN
Conference are responsible for their own accommodation.
York St John University offers
student residential accommodation in the form of
129 bedrooms during University summer vacation times (subject
to availability). A limited number of residential rooms are
available on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th July should you
wish to stay on the campus. These are single study bedrooms with
shared bathroom and toilet.
Rates:
Bed and breakfast rate if £24.00 per person,
per night (+20% VAT)
Room only at £21.00 per person, per night
(+20% VAT) – no breakfast
Availability is limited
therefore delegates interested in this type of accommodation
should check availability with the conference team on conference@yorksj.ac.uk as
soon as possible.
Alternatively, delegates can check Visit York if they want to stay in any
number of recommended hotels and B & Bs in York. If
you would like advice or help with your accommodation booking
please contact Suzanne. We have a number of hotels offering
discounted rates for delegates.
How do I get from the airport to York?
Information about rail travel to York can be
obtained at National
Rail or at the Trainline.
Manchester International Airport is
approximately one and a half hours away by road.
Frequent direct services run to and from Manchester Airport/York
with TransPennine Express and Northern Rail. These services run 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. Manchester is the most convenient
airport for York.
On arrival at Manchester Airport, please make your way to the
railway station, which is part of the airport complex. The trains
to York depart every hour. The journey to York takes
approximately two hours.
Fares: A ticket from Manchester to York is approx £26.00
From Leeds-Bradford
airport
Leeds Bradford International Airport is
approximately one hour away from York by road.
Bus services connect Leeds Bradford Airport to the major rails
hubs of Leeds or Bradford trains stations. Contact Metroline

From Heathrow
Airport
On arrival at Heathrow Airport make your way to the underground
station. There is a regular direct underground service from
Heathrow airport to King's Cross railway station (a single ticket
costs ~£5.00) with a journey time of approximately 45 minutes.
Trains travelling north to York leave from King’s Cross
station approximately every half hour and the journey time is
about two hours.
Fares: A return ticket from King’s Cross to York can vary
in price from £70 to £150 depending on time of
travel and when the ticket is booked. (Tickets are valid for
one month.)
How do I get from the train station to York St John
University?
It will take approximately 20 minutes to walk from the
train station to the University. If you get a taxi, the journey
will take five-ten minutes (depending on traffic) and
will cost £4.00 - £5.00 (July 2010).
When you come out of the front of the train station turn left
along Station Road. Keep going straight on, cross over and
continue straight on at the first set of traffic lights and proceed
until you reach the next traffic lights. Turn left and walk
across Lendal Bridge. At the next traffic lights, turn left
again. You will see the Theatre Royal on your right and the
Art Gallery on your left. Go straight on at the traffic
lights and along Gillygate. Go straight on at the next
traffic lights, along Clarence Street and the University main
entrance is on your right.
Can I use my laptop in my accommodation to check my emails
whilst at the conference?
There should not be a problem as most hotels and B & Bs in
York provide internet access. It is best however to check with your
accommodation provider when making your reservations.
Delegates to the conference will be given a guest account and
password which will enable them to use York St John University PCs
during their stay. Delegates will find these account
details in their conference packs which they will receive
upon registration.
Electricity
Electrical sockets in the UK have three square holes for the
three square plug prongs so you may need an adaptor for any
electrical appliances you have. The main voltage is 240v and the
frequency is 50Hz.
Can I make telephone calls from my accommodation?
When booking your accommodation, you
should check to see whether or not telephone calls are
permitted. Please note that charges apply for local calls in the
UK.
What if I need first aid or medical attention during the
Conference?
All international visitors to the UK should
ensure they purchase medical insurance prior to
travelling. The University has a small health centre on
campus whilst a hospital and a National Health Service (NHS)
walk-in clinic are located a short walk away from the
campus.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance to cover damaged or lost
luggage is recommended.
Flight details
We recommend that you notify the
conference team of your flight details and arrival time in
York at least two weeks prior to your arrival. Make sure
you have at least 6 months validity left on your passport. If
required, you should already have obtained entry
clearance/visa and this should be stamped in your
passport.
In your hand luggage you should
carry -
- Your passport
- Tickets, travel itinerary and other travel documents.
- Proof of required vaccinations if appropriate.
- Prescription medication (along with prescription).
- Your valuables including laptop and mobile phone (if you
have them). A UK Sim card can be purchased relatively cheaply
or international phone cards can be purchased (£5, £10, £20)
to call home
- We recommend that you have some small change with you (£5, £1,
50p 10p) for paying for phone calls or travelling by tube, bus or
taxi.
In addition it might be wise to label
your luggage clearly with the York St John University address on
it. If your luggage is lost during your journey, it can be easily
identified and forwarded on to you quickly.
How easy is it to travel to other places in the UK
from York?
York is well linked for convenient travel
north and south. Travelling to Edinburgh takes 2 and a half
hours by train and London takes around 2 hours by
train. Train timetables and buying tickets online can

website.
What is there to do in York?
There is always something to see or do in York. The local
paper, the York Press
provides information on all events happening in and around
York. The York Tourist Board website provides information
about places of historical interest and beauty in the York
