Welcome

Third International Conference on Value and Virtue in Practice-Based Research

2013 Theme: Influencing policy through enhancing professionalism

Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th of July 2013

York St John University

Dear Colleagues,

It is with the greatest pleasure that we bid you welcome to our third ‘Value and Virtue in Practice-Based Research’ conference. If you are returning you return as a friend. If you are attending for the first time, be assured of a warm and heartfelt welcome as you join our community of practitioner researchers, and enrich it with your good work.

The conference has become a much loved tradition in York St John University, and we look forward to strengthening it even more this coming year. We believe the special spirit that our community has developed together has given us a unique personality that is also a feature of York St John as an institution (look at the pictures). We laugh a lot and we also work hard, for there is serious work to be done. In a world that attends much to business and finance, often with a singular focus, we also attend to value and virtue in educational practices, and the form of relationships that makes them educational. We believe that ‘virtue’ is not only a word we say but also a practice we do. We believe that, by sharing our practices through the stories we tell at the conference, we can contribute to making the world a more peaceful and productive place, and you are part of that effort.

Our theme for the 2013 annual meeting is ‘Influencing policy through enhancing professionalism’. We invite you to submit abstracts and papers that show how you are doing this, wherever you are and wherever you work – in a hospital, or a shop, or on a running track or in a classroom. All are welcome to contribute, provided you are involved in a workplace and are conducting research with other people. We welcome innovative forms of presentation: dance, performance and group presentations as well as straight spoken papers.  If you have something to say for yourself, and would like to meet like-minded people, then the conference is the place for you.

As always, we aim to encourage a supportive, welcoming and kindly atmosphere throughout. We encourage critique, offered in the spirit of support to the person, and commitment to high quality research. We aim to protect the integrity of every participant and to ensure that your attendance at the conference will contribute to your own sense of personal wellbeing and intellectual potential.

We welcome abstracts by 28 February 2013, and will respond by mid-March 2013 to allow you time to organise the details of your visit – please see Submission of Abstracts

As before, the two days of the conference will be made up of workshops, keynote presentations, and individual papers. Further details regarding scheduling will be given as planning progresses.

If you have any questions regarding the organisation of the conference please contact the team at valueandvirtue@yorksj.ac.uk and we will respond as soon as possible.

This is a real opportunity for celebration, so come and join us. We look forward to welcoming you once again to York St John University.
