Holocaust Memorial Day
For Holocaust Memorial day this year the university has hosted
two events in association with York District Council:
“The Auschwitz Project”: an art
exhibition by disabled rights campaigner Di Lofthouse MBE who
created a series of artworks to try and explain her reaction as a
disabled person, to the events of the Holocaust. Di came to open
the exhibition and talk about her work. Examples of which can be
seen below.

Weep for
yourselves, not in self-pity but for the things ill done; for the
blind heart, the sterile spirit,
that brought him to
this pass

Moments in the
journey when there is nothing except a handful of earth, a mouthful
of dust and the
sharp stones
of the road, Hidden Lord, make us see

“Tikkun Olam: To Heal the World”:
a half-day event which looked at the impact of the
Holocaust and the genocide in Rwanda; to remember and listen to the
stories of those who died and those who survived. Guest
speakers included Dan Cohn-Sherbok, a well known Jewish theologian
and Grant Rogers from the Imperial War Museum.
