Educational Visits on the Judaism module
The staff in the Department of Theology and
Religious Studies at YSJU are keen to encourage students to engage
with people from different faith communities and the two modules on
Judaism are no exception.
In the first year, as part of their research into Jewish history,
belief and practice, students visit two synagogues in Leeds, one
Orthodox and one Reform to gain a deeper understanding of what it
means to live a Jewish life. They have the chance to meet a
rabbi and members of the synagogues where they can ask questions
about all aspects of Judaism and Jewish life.

Second year studies include the Holocaust and the way it has
affected the Jews’ relationship with God. The Holocaust is an
issue that everyone should be aware of and as part of their studies
the students visit Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre near
Nottingham. There they find out more about the effects of the
Holocaust on individuals’ lives and they get the chance to meet a
Holocaust survivor.
The centre also operates a ‘genocide watch’ across the globe,
monitoring areas where there is a potential for further
violence.
