Dr Mike Calvert
Head of Subject, Children, Young People and Education
(CYPE)
Mike began his professional career as a teacher of
modern languages and went on to work at the University of York
writing textbooks for students learning Spanish. He moved to the
University of Sheffield where he concentrated on PGCE modern
languages and eventually took responsibility for the Leadership and
Management strand of the MA in Educational Studies, teaching the MA
programme in the UK, Trinidad, St Lucia and Singapore.
At York St John University, Mike is currently
Head of CYPE with overall responsibility for the Foundation
Degrees, BA degrees and the MA programme. He teaches across
the range of programmes and is involved with initiatives in Kenya
aimed at improving teaching and learning in HE and in schools. Mike
lectures principally in the areas of research methods, citizenship
and pastoral care, leadership and management, and teaching and
learning in Higher Education.
Mike is an active researcher. His research
focuses mainly on the areas of citizenship, professional identity
and the management of change. He is Convenor of the European
Affective Education Network and on the NEC of the National
Association of Pastoral Care in Education (NAPCE). He is currently
carrying out research in Kenya on issues of identity and
professionalism in HE.
