Head of External Relationships
Paul is presently the Head of External
Relationships at principal lecturer level for the Faculty of
Education and Theology. In this role he is actively engaged
in a range of partnership work and widening participation
activities. Paul joined York St John in 2007 as Head of Programme
for Foundation Degrees in Educational Studies. In this role he led
the Foundation degrees in Supporting Learning and Working with
Children and Young People. He has contributed to the teaching of
both of these programmes and the University's BA (Hons) Children,
Young People and Families and BA (Hons) Educational
Studies. Prior to joining the University, Paul worked in
a number of sixth-form colleges in both the North West and West
Yorkshire teaching students from fourteen to sixty years of age. In
this time he taught and managed both traditional academic as well
as more vocationally orientated course including A level, Applied A
level, GNVQ, BTEC, ACCESS, GCSE, NVQ and PGCE. His previous
management roles include Head of Health and Social Care, Head of
Sociology, College Learning Advisor, Manager (pastoral), Central
Mentor and Assistant Head of School.
Paul has a First Class honours degree in
Sociology(m) and Education(s) from the University of York. He also
gained a Masters Degree in Education (by research) from the same
institution and a PGCE from the University of Huddersfield. Whilst
at York St John he has also obtained a Post-graduate Certificate in
Academic Practice. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
and an external examiner for the Leeds Metropolitan University. He
is an article reviewer for the Journal of Vocational Education and
Training and the Educational Review. Paul is also a bid reviewer
for the Higher Education Academy for teaching and development
grants.
Paul is actively involved in research and his
research interests include teaching assistants’ identities and
learning experiences, apprenticeships, lifelong learning,
foundation degrees and work-based learning. Presently he is engaged
in undertaking research for a PhD which has a working title of ‘An
Ethnographic Analysis of Teaching Assistants’ Engagement with
Foundation Degree Study’.
