Qualifications
Keither has a BA (Hons) in Humanities/Social
Studies (Politics, History and Sociology), a PGCE (Postgraduate
Certificate of Education) and also NPQH (National Professional
Qualification for Headteachers). She has completed a
Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice at York St John
University and has an MA in Educational Improvement, Development
and Change. She is also a university teaching fellow.
Information
Keither joined York St John University in
September 2008. She teaches whole school issues on the
Professional Studies modules of the PGCE secondary programme.
Prior to this she was in Australia where she
worked within Higher Education on a teacher training programme for
Postgraduate students.
Keither’s professional background in the UK
includes eighteen years of teaching in secondary schools. She
began her career as a teacher of Humanities in Luton where she was
also Head of Sociology and Head of History. Moving to London
she then worked as a Head of Humanities and coordinator of whole
school equal opportunities. The last six years within the
secondary sector were as Deputy Headteacher of a comprehensive
school in Northamptonshire. Prior to her move ‘down under’
she was Acting Headteacher at this school.
Keither is actively involved in research and
her research interests include: developing the critical engagement
of postgraduate trainee teachers with educational issues; teaching
and learning strategies within Higher Education and developing
school partnerships through active collaboration. She is
particularly interested in further investigating educational
attainment in relation to social deprivation.
Professional Memberships
Keither is a Fellow of the Higher Education
Academy and member of the British Educational Research Association
(BERA). She is an External Examiner for St Mary’s University
College, Twickenham.
