Information
I have a first degree in Biochemistry and
began my adult working life as a science teacher. It was as a
mature student that I started studying theology and I have been
hooked on the subject ever since! After completing an MA in
Theology and Religious Studies, I went on to do a PhD at Durham
University, before becoming a research consultant for the North of
England Institute for Christian Education (NEICE). I joined the
staff at York St John in 2007.
Research interests
My main research interest is in ‘ordinary theology’, understood
as the theology and theologizing of Christians who have received
little or no theological education of a scholarly, academic or
systematic kind. Ordinary theology research investigates (using
social-scientific methods) both the content of peoples’ beliefs and
the processes of learning, holding, developing, patterning and
critiquing these beliefs. My PhD research focused on mapping and
critically analyzing ordinary Christology, understood as the
account, by Christians who have received no formal theological
education, of who Jesus is and what he does for human salvation. I
have recently published a book on this subject.

Answers From The Pews
I continue to work with NEICE and Professor Jeff Astley on the
Ordinary Theology Project and am involved in the development of
ordinary theology research.
