Research Interests

My research interests are based around the following areas:

Formative Assessment

My time as a primary school deputy head included leading whole school development in assessment for learning.  I am interested in transferring this effective primary practice into Higher Education for example, written feedback.  Recently I have investigated whether improvement prompts could be used within written assignment feedback enabling feedback to be more constructive and formative.

Other strategies including layered questioning and learning partners are due to be adapted and trialled on both undergraduate and post graduate programs.

Trainee tracking

A related interest is that of the tracking of trainee performance (academic and placement related) to enable analysis of value added progress. and pinpoint intervention.  Alongside another member of staff, we hope to develop and trial systems across the undergraduate programme.

Leading Literacy

As a member of the Primary English team, the last three years have involved establishing and embedding the Leading Partners in Literacy project across all programmes.  This has included the development of video based VLE resources and additional phonic based placements.
