Reflections

The Archbishop of York was one of the speakers at the Symposium: ‘The Challenge of Leadership in a Changing Church’ that was held at York St John on 4 October 2011. The event was organised by the Faculty of Education & Theology’s Centre for Religion in Society. The first keynote speaker was Canon Malcolm Grundy, founding Director of the Foundation for Church Leadership and a PhD student at York St John. His address focused on Leadership and oversight as observed in the Yorkshire churches’.

Malcolm commented, “I am doing this PhD research because, at the time of my retirement from being a senior church leader, it seemed to me that many men and women appointed to senior jobs in the churches were unprepared and Participants from the symposium: (left-right) Professor Sebastian Kim, Canon Malcolm Grundy, Rev Prebendary Norman Wallwork, Vice Chancellor Professor David Fleming, the Archbishop of York,

present and future leaders.” He is exploring understandings of leadership and oversight in the five Yorkshire Dioceses and, as well as his wider research, he has interviewed  8 church leaders in the county and surveyed 138 others. His findings, based on their responses, include the prevalence of independent activity, poor communication, in-built conservatism and dominant personalities.

He published the first part of his research as a book, Leadership and Oversight: new models for episcopal leadership, with Continuum in January. He asserts that episkope – the shared responsibility which all members of episcopal churches have for one another – is the trust-building ingredient which is currently missing: “There is one immediate urgent and fundamental task required. This is for all those committed to church membership to regain a sense of ownership. A change of attitude and understanding is needed.
This change can only come as a result of teaching and example lived out by those who have caught the vision.”
