Programme in Theology & Religious Studies:
Foundation degree in Theology and Ministry
Study mode: Part
time
Study Centre: York
St John University
I left school without any qualifications, and
eventually went on to complete a nursing qualification. In
2002, whilst undertaking some Open University modules I found out I
had dyslexia, before then I just thought I was a poor
student.
I was 62 when I started the Foundation degree
in Theology and Ministry, and I was worried I was too old to cope
with being a student again, but I managed and have the award to
prove it!
Combining my home and work life with my
studies was manageable, though I admit when working at home it was
easy to get distracted by the television and telephone at
times. I set time aside to study without
distractions.
I felt called to be Reader and preach within
the Church. I discussed this with my Vicar and they
encouraged me to enrol for the programme, especially since it is
used for Reader training.
It was wonderful to meet new people, explore
my faith and learn new things. Personally the best aspect was
the sense of achievement I felt completing the programme, I never
thought I’d be able to complete a Foundation degree. I have
my graduation picture on the wall along with my degree
certificate. They are there to remind me, as I never thought
it was possible for me graduate from university. I would like
to explore a Theology and Music qualification in the future, as I
have a keen interest in music and have composed several pieces.
The programme was well organised and having
each topic confined to a term was helpful and made it less
confusing for me. It also meant I could focus my learning to
one area at a time and really explore it. Classes and
assignments were fascinating, exciting and awe inspiring. I
loved being able to ask questions in class and take part in
discussions.
The staff were absolutely brilliant with me,
they were understanding and helpful. Staff were also
accommodating and patient, taking the time to explain things to me
when necessary. Individual tutorials were offered and these
were extremely helpful.
One of the best things about the programme was
the opportunity to meet like minded people, some of whom are now
friends and I’m still in regular contact with them. Fellow
students were very supportive and open minded, making an excellent
atmosphere in class. I felt there was a lot of love and care
in the class room. Everyone made me feel very welcome,
allowing me to open up and talk to people in a way I didn’t think I
would ever be able to.
The YSJ campus is brilliant, and I think the
Student Union bar is fantastic. The University has a very
good library and excellent library staff.
Everyone at the University is so friendly and
it’s like a big family.
