The Revd Dr Andrew Village - Head of Postgraduate Programmes in Theology & Religious Studies

Andrew is the Head of the Programme and also acts as the Director of Studies at York and supports students with academic enquiries related to the Programme generally or their study. He teaches and is the Module Director on modules on both strands and supervises MA research modules. His research interests include how people interpret the Bible, psychology and faith and the beliefs and attitudes of lay people.

Dr Alice Collett - Lecturer in Asian Religions, MA in Theology & Religious Studies Research Module Director

Alice supports MA students in their research modules. She is available to discuss issues and concerns about Negotiated Study or Dissertation with students and for tutorials. Her research areas include: Buddhism and gender, Buddhist texts in Sanskrit and Pali, study of the Sanskrit language, orientalism and colonial encounters with Asian religions, early Indian Buddhism.

Dr Ann Christie - Senior Lecturer in Theology & Ministry

Ann's main research interest is in ‘ordinary theology’, understood as the theology and theologising of Christians who have received little or no theological education of a scholarly, academic or systematic kind. Ordinary theology research investigates (using social-scientific methods) both the content of peoples’ beliefs and the processes of learning, holding, developing, patterning and critiquing these beliefs.

The Revd Dr John Williams - Senior Lecturer

John's research interests are in the churches’ theology and practice of ministry and mission as these relate to the sociological context and surrounding culture. In particular John is looking at the strategies for ministry being developed by Church of England dioceses in the light of the falling numbers of full-time paid clergy. He is also interested in the changing patterns of theological education for ministry and especially the role played by HE validated academic programmes in these.

Religion & Public Life

The Rev Greg Hoyland - Senior Lecturer

Greg teaches Religion & Public Life modules and supervises research modules. His research interest focuses on how people ‘construct’ faith, and in particular, the role of institutional religion in a very ‘noninstitutional’ age. He has a particular interest in the Anglican tradition and is involved in the York St John project on religion and faith in York.

Prof Sebastian Kim - Chair in Theology & Public Life

Sebastian is the Module Director for the Public Theology module and contributes to various MA Religion & Public Life modules. He also supervises MA research modules and his research interests include: public theology; world Christianity; theology of mission; community and identity; contextual theologies; religion and post-modern society.

Prof Pauline Kollontai - Deputy Dean, Faculty of Education & Theology

Pauline’s teaching and research is in the area of World Religions and Religious Studies. Her research interests include: religion, peace and conflict, religious identity and community, and inter-religious dialogue.

Dr Chris Maunder - Head of BA Theology & Religious Studies

Chris is the Module Director for Theologies of Liberation module.  He has taught modules in liberation and practical theologies for some years, and in doing so, has helped students gain a new appreciation of the transformations that religious perspectives might achieve in a world of nation states and global economic structures. His passion is for a spirituality that is centred upon the inclusive, universal love and justice of God.

Richard Noake - Head of Theology & Religious Studies

Richard has carried out research into Sikh Diaspora experiences in the UK and contributed a chapter ‘An Examination of the Sikh Community’ in York to an edited book Community Identity: Dynamics of Religion in Context. He is also keenly interested in the relationships between theology and film, religion and art and creative writing and together with Sue Yore has been involved in the creativity project funded by the HEA and C4C CETL.

Dr Sue Yore - Senior Lecturer

Sue is the Module Director for Religion & Popular Culture and Her research interests include: theology and literature, women and writing and the role of the visual arts in religious expression. Additionally, she has been awarded funding by the Higher Education Academy and C4C CETL to head up projects to help students develop creative skills relating to theological and religious ideas and provide insights into alternative modes of assessment within the Theology & Religious Studies curriculum.
