Support for parents and carers
York St John recognises the positive impact the University can
have on the lives of its staff who have caring responsibilities
(whether as parents, guardians or carers) and seeks to create an
environment where a family-friendly approach benefits both the
individual and the organisation. The University supports
parents by paying occupational maternity pay rather than statutory
maternity pay to female staff on maternity leave.
With a range of flexible working options and parental leave the
University aims to support staff in achieving the work/life balance
that they need. Further information is contained in the
Flexible Working Procedure and Parental Leave Policy.
Nine requests for flexible working were made in the academic
year 2011/12, seven of which were agreed. Of the
applications, 4 were from men and 5 from women. This was an
increase of 4 requests from the previous year.
In 2011 the Flexible Working Policy was enhanced with the
addition of job sharing to our range of flexible options and
information was provided to support older workers with their career
planning post abolition of the default retirement age.
