HSE is the national independent watchdog for work-related health, safety and illness and acts as an independent regulator and in the public interest to reduce work-related death and serious injury across Great Britain’s workplaces.

From some stories in the media people may think that health and safety is all about stopping any activity that might possibly lead to harm. This is not the vision that the HSE wants for sensible health and safety – as they want to save lives, not stop them. As a result, the HSE approach is to seek a balance between the unachievable aim of absolute safety and the kind of poor management of risk that still all too frequently damages lives and the economy.

This sensible approach for Health & Safety is fully supported at York St John and the extensive practical guidance that the HSE provide on their website (as well as the more specialist information and copies of specific Regulations) is strongly recommended to our staff and students.  Their website is very easy to navigate and there is a very useful A to Z as well as an effective search engine.
