The University uses safety signs in accordance with the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations and the associated European Union standards.  These are standard of course to other public and private buildings and premises and use a standard colour scheme and pictures or ‘pictograms’ designed to provide a clear message even for anyone who cannot read.

All safety signs must be followed but for most students and staff the common signs that they will see and need to follow will be the Green ‘safe condition’ signs and it is essential that all staff and students look out for and follow these signs and the directional arrows, to ensure prompt evacuation in case of an alarm.

Safety Signs and in particular Fire safety must be covered as part of student induction (and this is also done in more detail with our International Students – given the possibility of different signage and procedures within their home country).

The University also has a Safety Signs Policy which all staff and students must follow.

If anyone sees that a safety sign is missing or has fallen off the wall please ‘See It Sort It and Report It’ to the facilies.helpline@yorksj.ac.uk

To learn more about signs and signals read the HSE Safety Signs and Signals guidance.
