Slips, Trips and Falls – An Introduction
Over a third of all major injuries reported to
the Health and Safety Executive (
HSE)
each year are caused as a
result of a slip or trip at work. This makes slips, trips and falls
the single most common cause of injuries in workplaces. Slips and
trips also account for over a half of all reported injuries to the
public and at York St John they regularly amount to 25-30% of all
our reported accidents. It is therefore very important that
Deans and Directors put in place appropriate management systems to
eliminate or minimise the risks of these hazards.
Detailed guidance on managing slips and trips
in the Education Sector can be found in the HSE
publication, Preventing Slips &
Trips in the Education Sector
Actions by Management &
Staff
The Facilities Directorate are responsible for
the provision maintenance and cleaning of all our buildings and so
have a key role to reduce any slips trips and falls. However
all staff have a responsibility to play their part to report
anything which might cause any accident and if they can, to do
something about it themselves. This could be as simple as
finding a paper towel to wipe up a coffee spillage or to spot, pick
up and put in the bin anything on the floor which could cause a
slip.
If any hazard is beyond their control – such
as torn or damaged carpets, steps, stairs or a more major spillage
or water leak all staff should report this to the Facilities
Helpline on facilities.helpline@yorksj.ac.uk
or 6666 who will pass it to the right facilities Team to take
action.
Notices can also help to remind people to
watch for ST&F hazards. For an example download and
