Your health, safety and well-being is of vital importance to the University and many things have been put in place to help make your time here successful, rewarding and above all safe.  To achieve this we need your help and ask you to act sensibly and safely whilst at York St John but we also need every student to let us know if anything if things go wrong.

As a new student you have responsibilities as part of the University Health & Safety Policy to

  • Work safely with due regard for the health and safety of themselves and others, including other students, staff and members of the public.
  • Report accidents and incidents that may lead to injuries or loss making conditions, and any unsafe or unhealthy conditions.
  • Comply with workplace health and safety rules.

You are also responsible as a member of the public under the UK health & Safety At Work Act in particular not to ‘interfere with or misuse things provided for the purposes of health and safety.

For instance, anyone tampering with or setting off fire extinguishers or covering over smoke detectors is in fact causing a criminal offence. This will result in disciplinary procedures against the student and such behaviour may also be reported to the Police. Fortunately such unsafe and stupid actions are relatively uncommon but will be treated very seriously if they occur.

  • All students should also watch the DVD ‘Stay Safe at Uni’ which explains our fire safety procedures which all students must follow in respect of Fire Safety.
  • Fire Safety and other safety messages are also contained in the ‘Student Health & safety Guide’
  • Student safety in taught activity is the responsibility of your Faculty/Business School and they are responsible for any local health and safety induction. Please direct any questions to your lecturing staff.

The University Health & Safety Officer Neil Rogers is also on site to support students and is also available for help and advice.
