About Finance
The Finance Department is one of the four administrative
departments at the University. Nicola Colton, Head of Finance
has responsibility for the operational aspects
of Finance and is supported by the Group Financial
Controller, Management Accountants and members of the
Department. The Department currently employs 17 members of
staff, 4 of whom are fully qualified accountants and 3 AAT
qualified members of staff. The Department is made up of 4
sections:
- Payroll
- Purchase Ledger (Payments to Suppliers)
- Sales Ledger/Cashier (Student Fees and Income)
- Management Accounts

The Finance Department's key strategic aims are to:
- Contribute the development of and support the strategic
direction and aims of the University
- Maintain appropriate standards of Financial Administration
& Stewardship
- Support and advise University staff on financial and resource
issues
- Support and advise the governing body and its committees
- Ensure satisfactory management of Internal Audit, Risk
Management, and Procurement activities.
The Department will provide timely, relevant and accurate
financial information internally and externally, improve financial
awareness, ensure compliance with appropriate regulations and Hefce
requirements, reduce complexity, develop and inform staff of a
suitable procurement strategy, process staff salaries and
associated payments, provide liaison with students on financial
matters and supply general support on finance-related
matters. The Finance Department’s Strategy is set within the
context of the University’s Mission Statement and Corporate
Plan. The Finance team support, specifically, the University’s
key strategic aim to ‘be financially and environmentally
sustainable University’.
The Department's service objective is to respond to queries in a
competent, accurate manner. A copy of the Department’s Service
