Worried about a friend

It is very hard when you see someone you care about behaving in ways that you instinctively know are destructive to themselves and others. It can even put stress on you because all attempts to help are rejected.

Talking to a counsellor can be helpful in these situations, not only to review effective strategies to get help for your friend but also as an outlet for you, the helper. If you feel you need to speak to someone about a friend ask at the Student Advice Desk in Holgate about the Wellbeing Drop-In sessions.

People manage crisis situations in many different ways:

  • Some can withdraw into themselves and become helpless

  • Some people can get angry and try to fight their way out of the crisis

  • Sometimes people run away from the situation and deny anything is wrong

  • Unhealthy coping mechanisms are often turned to, such as self-harm or drugs/alcohol

  • Some people get very agitated and demand attention.

Helping a friend in crisis factsheet will give you more information and guidance.
