Information for new and potential students
You can use any of our open access PCs to
access your learning materials, our Virtual Learning Environment
(Moodle), e-mail and the student desktop of software, which
includes the full Microsoft Office 2010 suite. Media editing
suites, scanning and full printing and copying facilities are also
available.
Once enrolled, you will be given a University
e-mail address and personal secure storage space on the network.
Although there are many PCs available in the University, you will
also find that a computer of your own, or access to one, is
invaluable. Any Internet-connected PC can access a range of
University services off-campus, including email, library
information services, Blackboard and e:vision.
All central areas, including the Fountains
Learning Centre, are wifi enabled so you can connect to the
internet using your own equipment provided your Operating System
meets our minimum recommended specification. We recommend
Microsoft Windows 7, although details of all the operating
systems supported by the wifi and residence networks are
available here.
ICT Services are unable to support students’
own equipment although we do provide guidance on connecting to our
network and basic troubleshooting which you can access through our
online support pages. In order to get connected as soon as possible
after you arrive you should familiarise yourself with your
equipment and know what Operating System, Web browser and Virus
protection software you use.
