Sending Large Attachments

There may be times when you wish to send files larger than the 10MB attachment limit. The 'Email Large Files' or 'ELF' application allows you to do this by giving you the ability to share documents across the internet.

It is ideal for those wishing to send large attachments, or for sending documents to colleagues in other faculties / departments when you do not have access to their shared drive.

Because emails containing password protected attachments cannot be sent to external recipients, ELF is a good alternative for anyone wishing to do this.

Installing ELF

Before you can use ELF you must install it first, any user can do this by simply following the steps below.

Left click the Start Icon on the task bar and type \\eisapps\otter\elf in the search bar and press return

When the exploer window opens, double click on 'Setup'

An 'Application Install' window will appear, press 'Install'

ELF will install on your computer and be ready to use.

Sending Files with ELF

Sending files with ELF is very easy. Open the ELF application.

  • Click the 'Load File' button and browse to the file you wish to send.
  • Add a 'Description' and optionally a 'Password'.
  • Select an expiry date.
  • Press the 'Send File' button. (it will only be selectable if all the other fields are filled out correctly. It may take some time to upload the file to the server)

A Microsoft outlook email window will appear.

  • Fill out the 'To' field with the recipients of the file
  • If you would like to write any additional information or comments to the body of the email you can. Note the link and password to the file is already included in the email. The recipient will need these details to retrieve the file.
  • Press 'Send' when you are ready.

Receiving Files with ELF

When someone sends you an ELF document, you will receive an email that will contain the link to the file, along with a password if it is required.

  • To open the attachment. Click on the link to open a web browser page

The web page will list the details of the file you have been sent along with a button to download it.

You will have to enter the password on this page if one has been set.
