Using your YSJ Mobile Device abroad

Information when taking your Mobile Desire abroad

Ensure your phone is setup for international roaming

You can check if your phone is enabled for international roaming or make a request for it to be enabled by contacting Ann Simpson or the Messaging Team in ICT.

If you need help when abroad

Call T-Mobile on +447953 966650 or the Messaging Team on +441904 876696.

Use a WiFi connection

We strongly recommend connecting to a WiFi network wherever possible before accessing email / web / data.  In some cases connecting via WiFi may even be free, or if not still considerably cheaper than using a Roaming data connection.  The other advantage with WiFi is that you could use Skype to chat with people back home for free.

Checking the data connection you are using

·         Press HOME > MENU and then tap Settings > Wireless & networks.

·         Tap Mobile networks > Network operators or Access Point Names.

Turning the data connection on or off

Turning your data connection can also save money on data charges. However, when your data connection is turned off, you may not always receive automatic updates to your email, social network accounts, and other synchronized information.

·         Press HOME > MENU and then tap Settings > Wireless & networks.

·         Select the Mobile network check box to turn on the data connection; clear the check box to turn off the data connection.

Changing general sync settings

It is recommended that you change your sync settings to manual whilst abroad.

·         Press HOME > MENU, and then tap Settings > Accounts & sync.

Select or clear the following:

·         Background data. If this is selected, applications can send and receive online account information even if you are not currently using them.

·         Auto-sync. If this is selected, applications can use the sync schedule defined in the account settings. If this is cleared, you will need to sync accounts manually. For instructions on doing this, see “Synchronizing an account manually” below.

Changing account settings

You can change settings such as the sync frequency and the types of information synchronized, the kinds of notification you receive, and the way that account information is displayed.

·         Press HOME > MENU, and then tap Settings > Accounts & sync.

·         Tap the account that you want to edit.

·         Edit the account settings.

Synchronizing an account manually

·         Press HOME > MENU, and then tap Settings > Accounts & sync.

·         Tap the account that you want to sync.

·         Tap Sync now.

Purchase a local SIM card

If you are planning on staying abroad for a while and will need to access data or make calls on a regular basis, you may wish to consider purchasing a local SIM card.
