The CLA Higher Education Licence

If you are making copies for teaching purposes you should ensure that you are familiar with the terms of the CLA Higher Education Licence - do not assume that a publication is covered by this licence. Certain categories of materials are excluded from the licence, as are certain specific works. The excluded categories are (amongst other things) unpublished works and printed music (including words of songs). The full list of excluded categories and the specifically excluded works can be found on the CLA website.

The Higher Education Licence permits paper to paper copying and scanning (paper to digital copying) of published works (for example core readings such as book chapters or journal articles), provided certain conditions are met. The Licence is restricted in terms of the amount of a published work that can be copied. So for example it will cover:

  • up to five percent of a work OR
  • up to one chapter from a book OR
  • up to one article from an issue of a journal

Full details of the conditions imposed may be found in the Licence and the accompanying User Guidelines.

If in doubt ask for advice from your librarian.
