Books
This is the order for a full book reference:
- Author(s), editor(s) or corporate author (usually an
organisation)
- Year of publication in round brackets
- Title (this should include the subtitle) - in
bold, italics or underlined, followed by
a full stop.
- If not the first edition, 2nd ed. 3rd ed. etc.
- Series and volume number (if any) followed by a full stop.
- Place of publication followed by a comma,
- Publisher followed by a full stop.
One author
Note if you use a direct quotation, you include the page
number(s) in the in-text citation.
- In-text citation:
- This theory is explored in greater detail by Fox (2005).
- Full reference:
- Fox, R. (2005) Teaching and learning: lessons from
psychology. Oxford, Blackwell.
Two authors
- In-text citation:
- Kilborn and Izod (1997) argue that television documentaries may
be used for propaganda purposes.
- Full reference:
- Kilborn, R. and Izod, J. (1997) An introduction to
television documentary: confronting
reality. Manchester, Manchester University Press.
Three authors
- In-text citation:
- Literacy teachers must create contexts for learning (Glynn,
Wearmouth and Berryman, 2006).
- Full reference:
- Glynn, T., Wearmouth, J. & Berryman, M. (2006)
Supporting students with literacy
difficulties. Maidenhead, Open University Press.
Four authors or more
- In-text citation:
- Use the first author's surname followed by 'et al' (Latin for
'and others').
- Chaffey et al (2006) suggest that those without access to the
Internet can experience social exclusion.
- Full reference:
- In the reference list only include the first author's name
followed by et al.
- Chaffey, D., et al (2006) Internet marketing:
strategy, implementation and practice.
Harlow, Prentice Hall Financial Times.
Introduction or Foreword of a book
- In text citation:
- Drabble (in Bronte, 1978) suggests………
- Full reference:
- Bronte, E. (1978) Wuthering heights and poems.
Orion, London. Foreword by Margaret Drabble.
A note on editions
If a book is not the first edition this should be noted after
the title using the abbreviation 'ed.'
- Rose, G. (2007) Visual methodologies: an introduction
to the interpretation of visual materials. 2nd ed. London,
Sage.
