Referencing

The aim of referencing is to provide the source of a particular quotation or piece of information so that the reader could then refer directly to the source if they wish to do so. The details that need to be provided for the main types of source are as follows:

 

For printed sources (both primary and secondary):

  • 1. Author, editor or translator
  • 2. Title of the book
  • 3. Volume number
  • 4. Number of the edition
  • 5. Place of publication
  • 6. Date of publication
  • 7. Page number or numbers

 

For articles in journals:

  • 1. As above for printed sources
  • 2. Title of the article
  • 3. The title of the journal
  • 4. The volume number of the journal
  • 5. The year (and sometimes the month)
  • 6. The page number or numbers
