English language requirements

The English language entry requirements for Bachelors and Masters programmes for students whose first language is not English are normally as follows:

English Language Test Minimum Score


6.0 overall, with minimum 5.5 in any area 


Listening - 17

Reading  - 18

Speaking - 20

Writing    - 17

 PTE (Pearson Test of English):

Listening - 51

Reading   - 51

Speaking - 51

Writing    - 51

 A GCSE or iGCSE in English

‘C’ grade

Cambridge FCE for entry onto the International Foundation Programme


Cambridge CAE or CPE for entry onto the 3-year and Masters degree programmes


* Higher levels may be required for certain courses

* Postgraduate Business programmes require 6.0 overall including 6.0 in writing and no section below 5.5.

The TOEFL and TOEIC English Language tests are no longer accepted as UK Visa & Immigration 'Secure English Language Tests'.  York St John University will continue to accept TOEFL iBT tests as an acceptable alternative test when the minimum CEFR B2 grade is achieved in each skill.  TOEFL iBT can only be considered when applicants are applying for Degree level or above programmes.

Applicants will no longer be able to use TOEFL iBT tests if they are applying for a programme below Degree level and will no longer be able to use TOEIC in any instance.
