We know that choosing the right course and the
right university can sometimes be mind-boggling, so here are
our top ten reasons why we think York St John University should be
your number one choice:
Our students regularly tell us that they love the York St John community and that this is an incredibly friendly place to live and learn. In fact York was ranked the 4th safest city in the UK in the Complete University Guide's 'How safe is your city?' ranking. Students love the fact that they can walk across the campus and see lots of familiar faces and that the staff in their area know them by name – none of our students are just a number to us.
Our commitment to community goes wider than the York St John campus. The University and York St John Students' Union have a great reputation for working positively to ensure a happy community through schemes such as Night Marshals, SSHH campaign and Community Coordinators scheme – we care about our local community.
We've invested heavily in our University over the last few years to make sure it is the best it can be for you and we were delighted to be shortlisted for THE University of the Year in 2013. We recently opened our one-stop-shop for Student Services, in our Holgate Centre, along with state-of-the-art student accommodation at our new St John Central site. In spring 2012, we acquired a 57-acre site, just 15-minutes' walk from the campus, allowing us to develop our sport, health and wellbeing for all agenda. The Sports Park is now in use for teaching, student and community sport and will be further developed during the next two years.
In response to student feedback and to ensure our learning and teaching facilities were up-to-date and appropriate to your needs, we invested heavily in our Fountains Learning Centre, a couple of years ago and this is now a hub for student-centred learning.
We were rated in the top 20 of institutions with the highest student satisfaction scores for teaching quality in the 2013 Sunday Times University Guide. We care about the quality of our teaching and we listen to our students' feedback. Much of your learning will be done in lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops but you will also experience group work, learning via Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), work placements, client-projects, practical and studio work. The mix and number of contact hours will depend on which course you are studying.
Our students consistently tell us that our staff (both academic and support staff) are approachable, friendly and supportive and our Academic tutor system ensures that you have all the support you need, when you need it.
We know that each student has an entirely individual student experience and at York St John we pride ourselves on having something for everyone and recognising our students as individuals.
We have a fantastic range of Student Services, all accessible via our brand new one-stop shop in our Holgate Centre, including: Disability Services, Student Finance and Welfare, Writing Support, Counselling, Chaplaincy, Accommodation, Dyslexia Support amongst many others. You are also fully supported on course via your academic tutor and Programme Reps (fellow students who represent you). Our Student Advice Team is on hand to answer any of your queries.
The social side of York St John University is wonderful and we encourage you to get involved with as much as possible, whether it's via volunteering, Students' Union activities, playing a sport, joining a society, becoming a student ambassador or getting involved with some of the nightlife that is on your doorstep.
York St John University has a stunning campus, minutes from the beautiful city centre of York and all it has to offer.
Our 11 acre site is in a beautiful setting facing the world-famous York Minster across the city walls. Originally built around a quadrangle in 1841, York St John's oldest buildings present a striking frontage to the University. Newer buildings added over the past few years provide a wonderful contrast and include De Grey Court and the Fountains Learning Centre which houses the library, IT facilities, Computer Science lab and a modern lecture theatre. The Foss Building houses our sports hall, a physiology laboratory, a biomechanics lab, a psychology lab, a biomedical sciences labs, a fitness suite, physiotherapy labs and general teaching rooms.
Other facilities include a dance studio, drama studio, music rooms (both practical and technical), TV and film production facilities, editing suites and dedicated art and design studios. There are a number of catering outlets on campus and the Students' Union has a bar, café, shop and offices on campus.
We are also developing our 57-acre Sports Park which is just 15 minutes walk from our main campus. Although the site is already in full swing, there are more exciting developments to come!
With around 20,000 students and around seven million tourists visiting the city all year round, York really is a lively place to be so much so that it was recently voted Europe's top international tourist destination. It's great for nightlife of all kinds, it has restaurants, pubs, wine bars and cafés to suit every taste imaginable and it's fantastic for shopping, including many independent shops. York St John is literally minutes away from the city centre, so is perfectly placed for nights out and retail therapy jaunts. It's also steeped in history and there are loads of arts, cultural and visitor attractions to tempt you too!

A major investment of over £100million in recent years has seen the development of exciting and cutting-edge buildings and facilities. The campus is now an impressive blend of the contemporary and historic, ranging from the RIBA award-winning De Grey Court to the quadrangle.
The acquisition of nearby outdoor sports facilities has allowed us to develop our Sports Park and the associated plans for sport, health and wellbeing for all. Phase 3 of the development of the 57-acre site is well underway, with plans for a state-of-the-art sports centre at the heart of the park. The Fountains Learning Centre was transformed in 2011 in response to student feedback and we invested £1.1million to create a new technology rich social learning environment across all three floors of the building.
De Grey Court, our £15.5million signature building is located in a prominent position, at the gateway to the city. Its proximity to the medieval walls and York Minster links the city centre with the University quarter.
- The York St John Business School and the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences
- Specialist facilities for Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy
- An additional state-of-the-art lecture theatre
- 20 seminar and breakout rooms
- Specialist and general teaching environments
- A Postgraduate Centre
We invested £18million on student accommodation within the city walls at Percy's Lane and Gray's Wharf and recently opened new student accommodation at St John Central which opened in September 2013. This has provided an additional 258 students with state-of-the-art accommodation just minutes from the city centre and only 10 minutes’ walk from campus.
